My Approach to Therapy

Each person’s life is unique. My focus is on collaboratively investigating your experiences, exploring the challenges that you are facing, and discovering your options for change. Learning to adjust to life changes is an important part of therapy. I work with my clients to create a therapeutic home base from which they can safely explore the issues troubling them.

Our therapeutic work emphasizes creating a wholesome life, cultivating self-care and developing meaning. Learning effective communication skills is an important part of this process.I have over 25 years of private practice experience working in the Staten Island community. I specialize in therapy for depression, anxiety, grief & bereavement, breakups & divorce and other life challenges.

I believe therapy is a path for creating productive changes in an individual’s life. As a practitioner and life-long Staten Island resident, I have extensive training and deep roots in the Staten Island community.

My Areas of Specialty

When you are depressed, it can feel like you’ll never escape that dark cloud. However, even the most severe depression is treatable. If depression is keeping you from living the life you want, seeking help from a licensed therapist is an important first step.

There are many effective approaches to dealing with depression and I can help you find the right one. I can help you reclaim your life.

As A Therapist, I Can Help You To:

  • reduce the stress in your life.
  • provide a new perspective on problems with family, friends, or co-workers.
  • make it easier to stick to your treatment.
  • learn how to cope with side effects from depression medication.
  • talk to other people about your condition.
  • catch early signs that your depression is getting worse.

Research shows that using therapy to treat anxiety disorders is usually the most effective treatment option. This is because anxiety therapy treats more than just the symptoms of the problem. Therapy enables individuals to uncover the causes of their worries and fears, and determine the appropriateness of medication.

My clients learn how to relax and begin looking at situations with a fresh and less threatened perspective. I will help you develop better coping and problem-solving skills to better manage your anxiety.

As A Therapist, I Can Help You To:

  • engage with life,  no longer acting passively and restricting your full potential. You will learn to take the initiative and act, rather than retreat.
  • change your brain's physiology. Effective therapy can modify the neural pathways, influencing how we feel about ourselves and the world around us.
  • understand your condition, based on your unique situation and circumstances.
  • remain on track with your recovery goals.

When a relationship ends or a marriage culminates in divorce, it can be a traumatic emotional event for each partner. Therapy for individuals coping with divorce can support the difficult mental, physical and financial process of uncoupling. A spouse undergoing divorce typically confronts feelings of guilt, fear, anxiety, depression and grief. Divorce therapy is usually provided on an individual basis.

A therapist experienced in work with divorcing couples can provide an objective and rational perspective, enabling the individual to weather the turbulence. Those who use therapy as a resource during this difficult process can benefit from learning more about themselves and begin to view it as a life transition, an opportunity for growth and personal development.

As A Therapist, I Can Help You To:

  • consider the practical aspects of separation.
  • appreciate the impact on other family members.
  • start the resolution and closure process with each other.
  • establish ways for couples to make decisions about the future.

Clear, effective communication is integral to relationships: we cannot not communicate!

Our relationships are affected by what we communicate as well as how we communicate it. All of us have had difficult discussions, or have had to express our thoughts under trying circumstances. Learning skills which can make these kinds of discussions easier and more productive is crucial to effective resolution.

As a therapist I can help you to:

  • help you express your concerns directly
  • learn to confront in a calm, focused manner
  • argue productively and peacefully
  • discuss difficult and painful topics

Bereavement refers to the process of recovering from the death of a loved one. Grief is a reaction to any form of loss. Both encompass a range of feelings from deep sadness to anger, and the process of adapting to a significant loss can vary dramatically from one person to another, depending on his or her background, beliefs, relationship to what was lost, and other factors.

If an individual's grief-related thoughts, behaviors, or feelings are extremely distressing, protracted, unrelenting, or cause concern, a qualified therapist may be able to help. Therapy is an effective way for individuals to learn to cope with the stressors associated with loss and to manage its challenges with relaxation and meditation techniques.

Each experience of grief is unique, complex, and personal, and therapy is tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual. For example, a therapist might help one find different ways to maintain healthy connections with the deceased through memory, reflection, ritual, or dialogue about the deceased.

As A Therapist, I Can Help You To:

  • identify and express feelings related to the loss.
  • create and begin to live a fulfilling life.
  • separate emotionally from the person who died and begin new relationships.
  • assist the bereaved in accepting the loss.
  • provide support and a specific time to focus on grieving.
  • allow the bereaved to better understand his or her methods of coping.

Choosing to see a therapist is a positive step to take on one’s life journey.
